Seven Games Without a Win: Olympiacos B's Defeat in Larissa Raises Questions Beyond the League Table

Another defeat leaves Olympiacos' reserve side in the Super League 2 relegation zone, with a goalkeeper injury adding to a difficult afternoon. There are defeats that can be explained away as part of a young team's development. Then there are sequences of results that demand closer examination. Olympiacos B's 2–1 loss to AEL Larissa belongs to the second category. After nine league matches, the Piraeus reserves have collected only six points. They sit 15th in a 16-team division, having failed to win any of their last seven league fixtures.
The result in Larissa did not come without resistance. Olympiacos threatened the hosts' goal, struck the woodwork and scored late enough to create an uncomfortable finish for AEL. Unfortunately, the response arrived too late to prevent another defeat.
A contest decided after halftime
The first half remained goalless, although AEL came close when Papageorgiou struck the woodwork in the 42nd minute. The hosts then missed a penalty shortly after the interval. That reprieve should have offered Olympiacos B an opportunity to reset. Instead, AEL established a two-goal advantage through Makris and Kampetsis.
Olympiacos' best opportunities came later. Santis struck the woodwork in the 79th minute before scoring a spectacular late goal to reduce the deficit. The final stages demonstrated the team's ability to threaten, but also exposed a recurring problem: promising passages of play have not consistently translated into points.
The concern surrounding Tsompanidis
Beyond the scoreline, the most immediate concern is goalkeeper Tsompanidis. ERT Sports reported that he suffered a rib injury during the first half, was replaced by Georgakopoulos at halftime and was transferred to a hospital for examinations. Until further medical information becomes available, it would be premature to speculate about a diagnosis or recovery timetable. For a reserve team already struggling for results, uncertainty over a goalkeeper's availability is another complication.
Development and results are not mutually exclusive
Olympiacos B exist within a broader club development structure. Their purpose is not identical to that of the senior team. Competitive minutes, tactical education, physical adaptation and the transition from academy football to the professional game are all central objectives.
A reserve team competing against experienced senior professionals provides an important testing environment precisely because opponents are motivated to win. That competitive pressure is valuable when it helps young players develop resilience and decision-making. It becomes more problematic when prolonged poor results create instability or reduce the quality of the competitive environment.
Seven league matches without victory do not automatically establish a failure of player development. They do, however, justify a closer assessment of how effectively individual progression is being balanced against collective performance.
The importance of the next response
The league table is increasingly uncomfortable. Olympiacos B have one victory from nine matches and remain near the bottom, while AEL's win lifts the Larissa club into the promotion conversation.
Olympiacos B's next scheduled league opponent is Ellas Syrou, offering an opportunity to interrupt the negative run.
For coach Álvaro Rubio, the challenge is to produce a more complete performance rather than another isolated late response. The immediate priorities are straightforward: improve consistency, limit decisive defensive lapses and convert competitive spells into results.
Why this matters to Olympiacos
The reserve side should be assessed as part of Olympiacos' long-term football infrastructure, not merely as a separate team accumulating points. Its competitive health matters because it affects the environment in which emerging players prepare for senior football. The defeat in Larissa is not proof of a structural problem. But seven consecutive winless league matches represent a meaningful warning sign. Olympiacos B now need to demonstrate that the experience being accumulated is translating into measurable collective improvement.
The development pathway remains important. So does the ability to win.
