Olympiacos have confirmed the returns of Kostas Fortounis and Leon Bailey for Sunday's Super League meeting with Kalamata. Lorenzo Pirola and Manolis Saliakas are also included despite recent fitness concerns, providing Imanol Alguacil with welcome defensive options. The announcement strengthens the Greek champions' squad, but the challenge now is deciding how aggressively to rotate during a demanding sequence of domestic and European fixtures.

Olympiacos' preparations for Sunday's meeting with Kalamata have received an important boost.

Kostas Fortounis is back in the squad. So is Leon Bailey and two defenders whose availability had been uncertain following Thursday's Europa League victory over Sparta Prague have also been selected.

The official squad announcement on Saturday afternoon provides Imanol Alguacil with greater flexibility as Olympiacos attempt to extend their six-match winning streak across domestic and European competition.

But it also introduces a different question.

With several important fixtures approaching, how should Alguacil balance the immediate opportunity to maintain momentum against the longer-term need to manage his players' workloads?

Fortounis returns at an important moment

Fortounis' inclusion is particularly encouraging. The experienced Greek midfielder missed the Europa League encounter with Sparta Prague after sustaining an injury against Panetolikos. Earlier reports had suggested his absence could extend beyond Thursday's European fixture. His inclusion against Kalamata therefore represents a meaningful improvement in availability. Fortounis provides Olympiacos with a different attacking dimension. His ability to receive possession between defensive lines, combine with teammates and identify forward passing opportunities can be valuable against opponents defending in compact formations.

Kalamata are likely to recognize the danger of allowing Olympiacos space in central attacking areas.

If the visitors attempt to restrict those spaces, Fortounis could help create opportunities through movement and combination play. However, being named in the squad does not establish that he is ready to play 90 minutes. Alguacil must still decide whether the midfielder is physically prepared to start or would be better introduced later.

Bailey provides another attacking option

Leon Bailey's return offers a different benefit. The Jamaican winger brings pace, acceleration and the ability to challenge defenders individually. Those qualities can stretch an opposing defensive structure.

When a wide player threatens to attack the space behind a full-back, the defending team must adjust its positioning.

For Olympiacos, Bailey's availability could therefore improve the balance between central creativity and direct attacking play. The combination of Fortounis and Bailey is particularly interesting. One can contribute through passing and positional movement. The other can provide penetration and individual attacking actions.

Together, they give Alguacil different methods of disrupting an organized defense, but their immediate roles remain uncertain.

Both have experienced recent fitness interruptions. The coaching staff must therefore determine how much responsibility they can safely assume.

The defensive news may be equally important

Although the attacking returns will attract considerable attention, the inclusion of Lorenzo Pirola and Manolis Saliakas could be just as significant. Both players experienced physical problems during the Sparta Prague match. Their availability was consequently uncertain.

Saturday's announcement confirms that they remain under consideration for Sunday's fixture.

That is particularly important because Panagiotis Retsos is suspended. The Greek international's absence removes an established central defender from the rotation. Without Pirola, Alguacil could have faced a more complicated defensive selection problem.

Saliakas' availability also increases flexibility at full-back. Nevertheless, the coach must still assess whether either player requires restricted minutes.

Marius returns to the domestic picture

Another interesting inclusion is Marius Mouandilmadji. The striker was unavailable for the Sparta Prague match because he is not registered for the Europa League. He returns to consideration for domestic competition.

That provides Alguacil with an additional attacking option.

A player unavailable in one competition may become important in another. For Olympiacos, that flexibility is useful during a period when fixtures arrive in quick succession. Mouandilmadji's inclusion also gives the coaching staff another opportunity to distribute attacking minutes.

Why rotation matters after Sparta Prague

Olympiacos' victory against Sparta Prague was another significant European result. It extended their perfect start to the Europa League league phase but European success creates additional physical demands.

Players must recover from high-intensity matches before returning to domestic competition. That becomes particularly challenging when fixtures are separated by only a few days. Olympiacos face Kalamata on Sunday before visiting Marko in the Greek Cup on Wednesday. They then return to Super League action against Kifisia on October 31. Four matches across ten days, including Thursday's European encounter, represent a demanding sequence.

Alguacil cannot evaluate Sunday's team selection in isolation. He must consider the cumulative workload.

That makes the returns of Fortounis and Bailey particularly valuable. Even if neither starts, their availability increases the options for managing minutes.

The challenge of changing a successful team

Rotation is not automatically beneficial. Olympiacos have developed considerable momentum.

Their recent victories suggest the team are functioning effectively within Alguacil's tactical approach.

Making several changes could disrupt that rhythm.

Players require familiarity with their teammates' movements, pressing responsibilities and defensive positioning.

A heavily altered lineup may need time to establish those relationships but avoiding rotation entirely also carries risks.

Fatigue can affect concentration, recovery and physical performance. The challenge is identifying which changes preserve the team's collective structure while reducing unnecessary workload.

Alguacil now has more choices than he appeared likely to possess earlier in the week.

How Kalamata could test Olympiacos

Kalamata arrive at Karaiskakis after consecutive league victories. Their recent form suggests they should not be dismissed as a routine opponent. Olympiacos will likely seek to control possession and establish territorial dominance but possession alone will not guarantee scoring opportunities.

The home side must create movement capable of disrupting Kalamata's defensive organization. That is where Fortounis and Bailey could become useful. If Kalamata defend narrowly, Bailey's pace may help stretch the pitch. If the visitors leave space between their midfield and defensive lines, Fortounis could exploit those areas.

The presence of both players gives Alguacil alternatives. However, the coach must also ensure that his team remain protected against transitions. Retsos' suspension makes defensive coordination particularly important.

Olympiacos cannot allow their attacking ambition to create unnecessary vulnerabilities.

The wider significance

Olympiacos are attempting to maintain momentum across multiple competitions. Their Europa League performances have been impressive. Their domestic results have also established a strong foundation.

The next challenge is sustaining that level while managing an increasingly demanding schedule. Saturday's squad announcement improves the situation. Fortounis and Bailey are available. Pirola and Saliakas remain selection options. Mouandilmadji returns to the domestic squad.

Only Retsos' suspension represents a confirmed new restriction among the players central to the latest availability reports. That gives Alguacil an opportunity to rotate without sacrificing as much experience or tactical flexibility.

The biggest advantage of Saturday's announcement is not simply that Olympiacos have regained two attacking players. It is that Alguacil now has more ways to manage the squad without compromising the team's competitive ambitions.

Whether Fortounis and Bailey start, appear from the bench or remain unused will depend on the coaching staff's assessment. Their inclusion alone is an encouraging development and with the fixture calendar becoming increasingly demanding, that additional depth could prove valuable well beyond Sunday's meeting with Kalamata.
