Olympiacos' top-eight chances surge to 68.7% — and the numbers reveal how their European ambitions have changed

Three consecutive Europa League victories have transformed Olympiacos' European outlook. Football Meets Data now gives Imanol Alguacil's team a 68.7% probability of finishing in the competition's top eight, up from approximately 54% after Matchday 2. The new projection suggests that direct qualification for the Round of 16 has become a realistic objective rather than an optimistic ambition.
Three matches have changed the conversation surrounding Olympiacos' European season.
At the beginning of the Europa League campaign, the immediate priority was to accumulate enough points to reach the knockout rounds.
Now, after victories over Jagiellonia, Marseille and Sparta Prague, the club has a considerably more ambitious target. A place in the top eight and the latest statistical projections suggest that objective is becoming increasingly realistic.
Football Meets Data has updated its assessment following Matchday 3. Olympiacos now have a 68.7% probability of finishing among the competition's eight highest-ranked teams. That is a substantial improvement from the 54.4% estimate published after their victory in Marseille. The probability of finishing inside the top 24 has also increased to 99.8%. For Olympiacos, the implications extend beyond simply advancing in Europe.
They concern fixture management, financial opportunities and the strategic direction of the season.
From qualification hopefuls to top-eight contenders
The significance of the new projection lies in how quickly Olympiacos' position has improved.
Following Matchday 2, the club already possessed a strong foundation. Six points from two matches had established a promising start but the latest victory has strengthened that position considerably.
Nine points from three matches place Olympiacos fifth in the current league-phase standings. More importantly, the updated model suggests they are now more likely than not to finish in the top eight.
That distinction matters.
Olympiacos are no longer dependent on an improbable sequence of favorable results to reach the Round of 16 directly. They have created a position from which qualification is a credible expectation. It is not guaranteed but the balance of probability has shifted in their favor.
Why the difference between eighth and ninth is enormous
The Europa League's league-phase format creates a substantial distinction between finishing eighth and finishing ninth. The top eight teams advance directly to the Round of 16.
Teams finishing ninth through 24th must participate in an additional two-legged knockout playoff.
For a club competing across multiple competitions, avoiding those fixtures can be valuable. The additional matches require travel, preparation and physical recovery.
They also create another opportunity for injuries and suspensions to disrupt the squad. Olympiacos are pursuing domestic objectives alongside their European campaign. Reducing the February workload could therefore provide an important advantage.
It would allow Alguacil to manage his squad with greater flexibility during a demanding period.
The financial dimension
A top-eight finish would also create additional financial opportunities. Under the Europa League distribution structure, clubs finishing in the top eight receive a €600,000 league-position bonus. Direct qualification for the Round of 16 also carries a €1.75 million payment. There are additional payments associated with final league-phase ranking. Those amounts are important, but the sporting implications may be even more significant.
A club that avoids the knockout playoffs gains additional preparation time.
That can influence performance in subsequent European fixtures and domestic competition. For Olympiacos, the objective should therefore be considered in both sporting and financial terms.
What does Olympiacos need from the remaining five matches?
The club currently has nine points. Historical results provide some guidance about what may be required to finish in the top eight. In the 2024–25 Europa League, Rangers secured eighth place with 14 points. The following season, Roma finished eighth with 16 points.
Those figures suggest that Olympiacos may need approximately 15–17 points to give themselves a strong opportunity. But that is a planning benchmark, not a guaranteed qualification threshold. Goal difference could also become important. Olympiacos currently possess a goal difference of +3. Their remaining fixtures therefore present two objectives.
The first is collecting points. The second is protecting or improving their goal difference. A narrow victory is valuable. But when teams finish level on points, the margin of results can become decisive.
The importance of Rennes
Olympiacos' next European match is away against Stade Rennais FC on November 5. A victory would move Olympiacos to 12 points after four matches. It would place them in an excellent position with half the league phase remaining but Rennes represent a demanding away assignment.
Olympiacos must balance attacking ambition with the defensive organization that has contributed to their recent European success. The remaining schedule also includes AC Milan, Celje, Hoffenheim and Torreense.
That variety of opponents means the club cannot rely on a single tactical approach. Alguacil will need to demonstrate adaptability.
Why probabilities are not guarantees
The 68.7% figure is encouraging but it is important to understand what the number represents. Football Meets Data uses statistical modeling to estimate possible outcomes. The projection incorporates information about team strength, results and remaining fixtures. It does not mean Olympiacos have already qualified. Nor does it establish that their probability will continue increasing.
A defeat in Rennes could reduce the estimate. A victory could strengthen it further. The model will respond to results across the entire competition, not simply Olympiacos' performances. That makes the remaining five matchdays important.
The bigger picture
Olympiacos have already secured one of the strongest starts in their recent European history but the latest projections demonstrate that the significance of those results extends beyond the current standings.
They have materially improved the club's chances of avoiding an additional knockout round. That creates opportunities for better squad management, increased financial rewards and a more favorable European pathway. The challenge now is maintaining the level required to turn those probabilities into results.
Olympiacos have moved from hoping to qualify for the knockout rounds to having a credible chance of advancing directly to the last 16.
The numbers reflect that transformation. The next five matches will determine whether it becomes reality.
