Olympiacos has confirmed its traveling squad for Thursday's Europa League meeting with Marseille. Leon Bailey's absence removes an important direct attacking option, but Kostas Fortounis' return gives Imanol Alguacil another creative solution as the Greek club prepares for a demanding European away fixture.

Olympiacos will travel to Marseille without Leon Bailey. The uncertainty surrounding the Jamaican international's fitness has now been resolved, at least for Thursday's Europa League encounter.

Bailey was omitted from the 22-man squad announced by Olympiacos on Wednesday morning after experiencing muscular discomfort during Tuesday's training session. The club has not established a recovery timetable but the immediate consequence is clear.

Imanol Alguacil must prepare for Marseille without one of the attacking players recruited to provide additional speed and individual quality. There is, however, some positive news. Kostas Fortounis returns after completing his suspension and the inclusion of young Christos Filis provides another indication that Alguacil is prepared to involve developing players in the first-team environment.

The selection leaves Olympiacos with an interesting tactical question. How should the team compensate for Bailey's absence while making the best use of Fortounis' return?

Bailey's absence removes a different attacking profile

Bailey offers qualities that are particularly useful when a team is forced to defend for extended periods.

His acceleration allows him to attack space quickly. His ability to carry possession can turn a defensive recovery into an attacking opportunity and his directness can force opposing defenders to retreat rather than immediately press forward.

Those characteristics matter in European away fixtures. Against Marseille, Olympiacos may experience periods without sustained possession. The ability to progress into attacking areas quickly could therefore become important. Bailey would have provided one way of achieving that. His absence does not mean Olympiacos cannot threaten Marseille through transitions. Gelson Martins and Jota Silva remain available. Both provide options in advanced areas but losing Bailey reduces the range of attacking combinations Alguacil can select.

That is the immediate tactical cost.

Fortounis offers a different solution

Fortounis' return changes the equation. Unlike Bailey, whose greatest strengths include acceleration and direct running, Fortounis can influence attacks through his positioning and passing. He can operate between defensive lines. He can help connect midfield possession with the attacking unit.

He can contribute to the creation of opportunities through combinations rather than relying exclusively on individual dribbling. Replacing Bailey does not necessarily require finding another player with identical characteristics.

Alguacil could instead adjust the team's attacking structure. A system emphasizing controlled possession and movement between the lines may reduce the need for repeated individual carries. Fortounis could contribute to that approach. However, his inclusion in the traveling squad does not guarantee a starting position. The coach must still evaluate his physical condition, tactical suitability and the demands of the opponent.

The challenge of attacking Marseille away from home

Olympiacos enters Thursday's match after defeating Panathinaikos 1–0 in the domestic derby. The result provided an important psychological boost but the European challenge will be different. Marseille will have home advantage and the opportunity to establish its own rhythm.

For Olympiacos, the central requirement will be maintaining a coherent relationship between defensive organization and attacking ambition.

If the visitors defend too deeply without an effective outlet, they risk spending extended periods under pressure.

If they commit too many players forward, they could become vulnerable when possession is lost. Finding the appropriate balance will be essential. Bailey's absence removes one potential transition weapon. Fortounis' return provides another possible means of progressing possession. The question is which approach best suits the players available.

What the squad suggests about Alguacil's options

Olympiacos has retained considerable defensive depth. Panagiotis Retsos, Lorenzo Pirola and David Carmo are all included. The midfield options feature Santiago Hezze, Remo Freuler, Vicente Puerta and Chiquinho.

Further forward, Fortounis, Gelson Martins, Jota Silva and Roman Yaremchuk provide different attacking characteristics.

That gives Alguacil several possible combinations. He could emphasize defensive stability and look to exploit counterattacking opportunities. Alternatively, he could prioritize midfield control and use the movement of his attacking players to create openings.

The official squad does not establish which approach he will choose. It does, however, confirm that he has alternatives despite Bailey's absence.

An opportunity for Christos Filis

The inclusion of Filis is another noteworthy detail. Young players can benefit from being involved in European first-team preparations even when they do not receive substantial playing time. Traveling with the squad exposes them to the demands of international competition.

They experience the preparation process. They observe senior players and they become familiar with the expectations surrounding important fixtures. That experience can contribute to their development.

Selection should not be confused with a guarantee of minutes. Alguacil's immediate priority remains preparing the strongest possible team for Marseille. Filis' inclusion is nevertheless a positive indication of his involvement with the senior group.

Managing Bailey's fitness beyond Marseille

The decision to exclude Bailey also has implications beyond Thursday. Olympiacos faces Panetolikos in domestic competition on Sunday. Further European commitments follow. The schedule creates limited opportunities for recovery between matches.

For a player experiencing muscular discomfort, returning prematurely can present additional risks.

However, the club has not disclosed the precise nature of Bailey's problem. It would therefore be inappropriate to predict how long he will remain unavailable. The important distinction is between his confirmed absence from the Marseille squad and his longer-term fitness status.

The bigger picture

Olympiacos approaches Marseille with confidence following its derby victory and successful Europa League opener against Jagiellonia but the squad announcement creates another challenge for Alguacil.

Bailey is unavailable, Fortounis returns, and the coaching staff must determine how best to structure the attack around the remaining options. The situation also illustrates an important principle of squad construction. Depth is not simply about having several players capable of occupying the same position. It is about possessing different tactical solutions. Bailey offers directness and acceleration. Fortounis offers creativity and combination play. Martins and Jota Silva provide further alternatives. Each can influence the game differently.

For Olympiacos, the challenge is not merely replacing an absent player. It is identifying the attacking structure most likely to succeed against Marseille.

Thursday's match will provide the first opportunity to evaluate Alguacil's solution.
