Panagiotis Retsos scored the winner as Olympiacos defeated Panathinaikos 1–0 at Karaiskakis, surviving more than 25 minutes with ten men following Manolis Saliakas' dismissal. The victory ends Panathinaikos' perfect league start, reduces the gap at the top to two points and provides Imanol Alguacil with his most significant domestic result since taking charge.

There are victories that improve a team's position in the table. Then there are victories that can change the way a team understands itself. For Olympiacos, Sunday's 1–0 triumph over Panathinaikos offered elements of both.

The Piraeus club entered the Derby of the Eternal Rivals facing an opponent that had won its opening five league matches. Panathinaikos had established an early advantage in the championship race.

Olympiacos, meanwhile, was still adapting to Imanol Alguacil's tactical approach. The derby represented an opportunity to reduce the gap. It also offered an examination of whether the team could translate its developing principles into a performance against one of its strongest domestic opponents. The answer arrived through an unusual combination of attacking initiative, defensive discipline and collective resilience. Panagiotis Retsos scored the only goal, Manolis Saliakas was dismissed, and Olympiacos protected its advantage despite playing the closing stages with ten men. The final result was 1–0. Its significance extended well beyond the narrow margin.

Alguacil's opening approach delivers

Olympiacos began the match with considerable intensity. The hosts attempted to establish possession in advanced areas while disrupting Panathinaikos' buildup. Chiquinho produced an early shooting opportunity.

Fortounis also threatened. Mouandilmadji's physical presence gave Olympiacos another option when progressing the ball toward the attacking third. Those opening exchanges suggested that Alguacil wanted his team to dictate the game's tempo. The approach was consistent with the coach's reported pre-match emphasis on controlling possession and maintaining concentration, yet the most encouraging aspect was the team's willingness to attack. Olympiacos did not simply attempt to neutralize Panathinaikos. It sought to create opportunities.

Retsos delivers the decisive moment

The breakthrough arrived in the 34th minute. Fortounis delivered a free kick from the left. The ball remained inside the penalty area. Remo Freuler recognized the opportunity to find Retsos. The Olympiacos captain finished to establish a 1–0 advantage. It was a significant contribution from a player whose principal responsibilities normally lie at the opposite end of the pitch.

The goal also illustrated the importance of set-piece situations. Olympiacos had created opportunities through open play. The decisive breakthrough emerged from a second phase following a free kick. That is an important attacking mechanism.

When an opponent survives the initial delivery, the defending team must reorganize quickly. Players can become temporarily disconnected from their defensive assignments. Second balls may create opportunities for attackers who were not the original targets. Olympiacos exploited that situation. Freuler's contribution was particularly valuable. His awareness allowed Retsos to receive possession in a dangerous area. The captain supplied the finish.

A red card forces a tactical transformation

The match changed in the 66th minute. Saliakas received a second yellow card after another challenge involving Santino Andino. The defender had been booked only three minutes earlier. Olympiacos was reduced to ten men. For Alguacil, the dismissal created an immediate tactical problem. His team had established an advantage while operating with a conventional back four. Removing the right-back disrupted that structure.

The coach needed to restore defensive balance without eliminating the team's ability to attack. His response was decisive. Pedersen, Gelson Martins and Yaremchuk entered. Olympiacos reorganized into a 4-4-1. That formation allowed the team to retain four defenders and four midfielders while preserving a central attacking reference. The adjustment changed the nature of the contest.

Olympiacos could no longer pursue the same level of attacking pressure. It needed to protect space, maintain compact distances and respond selectively when possession was recovered.

Why the 4-4-1 worked

Playing with ten men creates several structural challenges. The defending team must cover the same playing area with fewer players. That increases the importance of positional discipline. A 4-4-1 can provide a relatively stable defensive framework. The midfield line helps protect the spaces in front of the defense. Wide midfielders can support their fullbacks. The central striker remains available as an outlet, but the formation only works when the distances between players remain manageable.

If the midfield drops too deeply, the opposition can establish possession near the penalty area. If the striker becomes isolated, the defending team may struggle to retain the ball after regaining possession. Olympiacos had to manage those competing demands. The available match reporting indicates that the hosts maintained sufficient organization to prevent Panathinaikos from creating a decisive equalizing opportunity.

That does not mean the defensive performance was flawless. It means the collective structure proved effective enough to protect the lead.

Panathinaikos' attacking response falls short

Jacob Neestrup attempted to exploit the numerical advantage. Levi Garcia and Cyriel Dessers were introduced.

Panathinaikos committed additional attacking resources. The objective was clear. The visitors needed to stretch Olympiacos' defensive structure and create opportunities against a team operating with one fewer player.

The numerical superiority does not automatically produce attacking efficiency. A team must circulate possession quickly enough to move defenders out of position. It must identify spaces between defensive lines.

And it must create situations in which attackers can receive the ball facing goal. Panathinaikos struggled to translate its additional player into a decisive attacking advantage. Olympiacos remained compact. The visitors' pressure did not produce an equalizer.

That outcome represents an important defensive achievement for Alguacil's team.

Retsos provides leadership at both ends

The captain's contribution extended beyond his goal.

Retsos was part of a defensive unit that had to withstand increasing pressure during the final stages.

The challenge became more demanding after Saliakas' dismissal.

Central defenders needed to maintain concentration while responding to attacking movements from several opponents.

They also had to coordinate with a reorganized midfield.

For Retsos, the performance combined two important responsibilities.

He delivered the decisive attacking contribution.

Then he helped protect the advantage.

Those qualities made him a central figure in the victory.

What Alguacil's comments reveal

The coach's postgame assessment was revealing. Alguacil praised the team's concentration and pressing before the dismissal. He also emphasized the importance of emotional commitment in a derby, but he made clear that the team could not spend too long celebrating. Olympiacos faces another important fixture within days.

That response suggests the coach is attempting to establish a broader performance culture. A derby victory provides confidence but it should not become a substitute for continued improvement. The challenge is translating Sunday's intensity into consistent performances against different opponents.

The championship race changes

The result has immediate consequences for the league standings. Panathinaikos entered the match with a perfect record. Olympiacos ended that sequence. The gap between the clubs is now two points.

A defeat would have allowed Panathinaikos to establish a considerably larger advantage. Instead, Olympiacos has moved closer to the leaders. The championship remains in its early stages. One derby does not determine the title but the result changes the immediate competitive context.

Panathinaikos must respond to its first defeat. Olympiacos can approach its next domestic fixtures with greater confidence.

The Marseille challenge comes next

The timing of the victory is also significant. Olympiacos travels to France for Thursday's Europa League meeting with Marseille. The team will enter that fixture having demonstrated two different tactical qualities.

It can press aggressively and attempt to control possession. It can also defend collectively when circumstances demand a more conservative approach. Both qualities may become important in European competition.

However, Saliakas' dismissal also provides a reminder that discipline remains essential. Olympiacos cannot afford to repeatedly create numerical disadvantages. The team's response against Panathinaikos was impressive. Avoiding the need for similar recoveries should remain a priority.

A result that changes the conversation

Olympiacos needed more than an encouraging performance. It needed a significant victory.

Against the league leaders, the team delivered one. Retsos scored. Alguacil adapted. The players defended their advantage. Karaiskakis celebrated a result that reduced the gap at the top.

The most important lesson is not simply that Olympiacos can win with ten men. It is that the team demonstrated the tactical flexibility and collective discipline required to overcome a major setback.

Sunday's victory does not guarantee future success but it provides Alguacil with an important foundation.

Olympiacos has moved within two points of the championship leaders. And the derby has offered evidence that the team can compete under pressure.
