Olympiacos have now made an €8 MILLION PERMANENT offer for Edson Álvarez — but fresh Mexican reporting also weakens the earlier claim that the player had already agreed

The Edson Álvarez pursuit has changed shape. Earlier, the logic was straightforward. West Ham valued a permanent transfer beyond what Olympiacos realistically wanted to spend, so Piraeus explored a loan. The latest Mexican information says Olympiacos have now gone further and submitted approximately €8m for permanent ownership. That matters because a permanent acquisition would fundamentally change both the financial logic and the midfield plan.

Olympiacos would no longer be borrowing experience — they would be buying the defensive core

A loan would make Álvarez a one-season tactical solution. A permanent transfer makes him part of the project.

At 28, Olympiacos would be purchasing prime years rather than developmental upside. That means the club must believe his role extends well beyond plugging a temporary hole. He would be expected to become one of Mendilibar’s central reference points.

The €8m opening figure is aggressive but not unreasonable

AS México notes that Álvarez remains under West Ham contract through June 2028. That means West Ham do not have to accept a discounted sale simply because he is not central to their plans. An €8m offer is therefore best interpreted as a starting point. It is serious enough to establish Olympiacos as a real buyer. It is not necessarily high enough to close the deal. The next West Ham response matters far more than another Greek report saying negotiations are “moving.”

Ownership would solve one weakness of the loan concept

The biggest problem with the original loan idea was strategic. Olympiacos would absorb salary and tactical integration costs while West Ham retained the asset. If Álvarez succeeded brilliantly, much of the long-term benefit would still belong to West Ham unless a purchase option existed. A permanent deal changes that.

Olympiacos get immediate footballing value plus control over the player’s future. That is much more attractive if the price remains within reach.

The player-choice issue is now the most important caution

The freshest Mexican reporting is especially useful because it contradicts the idea that Álvarez has already completely chosen Olympiacos. Súper Deportivo says he is still evaluating his options. Real Sociedad remain highly relevant. The choice is not simply financial. Sociedad offer La Liga. Olympiacos offer:

a likely major starting role;

Europa League football;

a team investing aggressively;

and another Mexico international already present in Armando González.

Both paths have legitimate appeal. Until Álvarez himself or a top-tier reporter clearly says he has chosen one, the player side should remain open, not “agreed.”

That correction actually makes the €8m bid more interesting

Olympiacos are apparently willing to negotiate with West Ham before having an absolutely locked player decision. That suggests the club wants to build enough momentum on the seller side that Álvarez can see a concrete permanent route to Piraeus. Real Sociedad are offering a loan pathway. Olympiacos can counter with ownership, stability and a defined role.
