GUSTAVO PUERTA MAKES HIS OLYMPIACOS DEBUT, STARTING AGAINST VOLOS

Gustavo Puerta has spent his first days at Olympiacos as an idea. A transfer fee. A scouting profile.

A player whose numbers suggested certain possibilities. Against Volos, the theoretical phase ends.

For the first time, José Luis Mendilibar can evaluate his new midfielder inside an actual Olympiacos match.

And the most interesting element is not simply that Puerta is playing. It is where and with whom he is playing.

Mendilibar puts Puerta directly into central midfield

The Olympiacos XI published by the club places Puerta alongside young midfielder Filis, with Gustavo Sá positioned ahead of them. That configuration immediately gives us something useful. Puerta is not being introduced as a luxury attacking midfielder. He is being asked to operate from the deeper central structure.

That means his first responsibilities should include:

receiving during buildup;

breaking pressure with carries or progressive passing;

covering transitions when Olympiacos lose possession;

supporting the high press;

and deciding when to advance beyond the first midfield line.

Those are exactly the areas in which Olympiacos needed greater athleticism and progression.

The opponent makes this an ideal controlled test

Volos is familiar. Olympiacos played them only three days ago. Mendilibar therefore already has a current picture of the opponent’s defensive structure, pressing triggers and transition threats. That gives him a relatively controlled environment in which to examine Puerta. At the same time, it is not meaningless preseason football.

This is a competitive Cup match, and Olympiacos are trying to move to two wins from two in the league-phase format after their 4–0 victory over AEL. Puerta therefore gets exactly the type of debut a coaching staff often wants for a major signing:

competitive enough to expose weaknesses;

manageable enough to experiment.

The Filis partnership is particularly interesting

Playing Puerta beside Filis also places additional responsibility on the Colombian. There is no established veteran such as Dani García or Remo Freuler beside him to dictate every phase. That should force Puerta to communicate, organize his positioning and make decisions himself. For scouting purposes, that is valuable.

It can reveal whether he naturally takes responsibility for progressing possession or waits for teammates to dictate the game around him.

Olympiacos paid heavily for a midfielder they expect to eventually influence matches.

Tonight provides the first evidence of how quickly that process may happen.

Puerta does not need to dominate immediately

The transfer price inevitably creates expectations. That can distort evaluation.

The correct questions from his debut are not:

Did he score?

Did he produce a spectacular highlight?

Was he immediately the best midfielder in Greece?

The more useful questions are structural:

How comfortable is he receiving with his back to pressure?

How quickly does he release possession?

Can he turn under pressure?

Does he recognize when to carry rather than pass?

How aggressively does he counterpress?

Does he maintain his position when the fullbacks advance?

Can he connect with Gustavo Sá and the wide players?

Those details will tell us much more about his eventual fit in Mendilibar’s system.

Olympiacos’ midfield competition is about to become fascinating

Puerta enters a midfield that already includes several very different profiles. Santiago Hezze provides defensive aggression and ball recovery. Remo Freuler offers positional intelligence and security. Dani García provides experience and control. Lorenzo Scipioni brings youth and technical upside. Christos Mouzakitis offers passing quality and progression. Now Puerta adds another combination of physicality, carrying ability and forward movement.

That gives Mendilibar genuine tactical choices. It also creates competition. A €16 million signing will obviously be expected to earn significant minutes eventually, but those minutes will have to be integrated into a midfield that already contains players the coach trusts.

Tonight is the beginning of that process.
