Wolfsburg have REJECTED Olympiacos’ first offer for Joakim Mæhle — with the asking price now reported around €7m

The Joakim Mæhle story had become increasingly difficult to evaluate because almost every obstacle seemed abstract. The player liked the project. Olympiacos wanted him. Wolfsburg were negotiating. But there was no clean seller response. Tuesday evening changed that.

Wolfsburg have reportedly rejected Olympiacos’ opening proposal and are seeking a figure around €7 million.

That is useful information even though the answer was no. Olympiacos now know the apparent cost of finishing the transfer.

€7m is substantial — but not remotely impossible for this Olympiacos window

The club have already been operating at much higher valuations elsewhere. Armando González required major capital. Rubén Vargas could approach €14m with bonuses. Puerta discussions have moved well into eight figures. Against that background, €7m for an established Denmark international is not automatically prohibitive.

The relevant question is value, not affordability.

Mæhle’s versatility is where part of that value comes from

Olympiacos are not simply buying a right-back. Mæhle has extensive experience on both flanks. That potentially lets Mendilibar carry one fewer specialist defender while retaining high-level coverage behind both Nair Tiknizyan and Manolis Saliakas. Versatility therefore has a squad-budget value beyond his starting position.

But the age profile matters

Mæhle is 29. Olympiacos would be buying his immediate prime rather than a player expected to appreciate dramatically in resale value. That makes €7m fundamentally different from spending a similar amount on Rafik Belghali at 24.

With Mæhle, the return should primarily come through:

starts;

European performance;

trophies;

and tactical reliability.

Not a later transfer profit.

Juventus arriving at this moment weakens Olympiacos’ negotiating comfort

This is the inconvenient part. If Olympiacos had been Wolfsburg’s only credible option, they could afford to negotiate patiently. Now Juventus have asked about Mæhle while already talking to Wolfsburg over Kamil Grabara. The Italian club are reportedly considering either a permanent purchase or loan-with-option structure.

That does not mean Juventus are ahead.

It means Wolfsburg now have another possible buyer to use in discussions.

Olympiacos should still resist bidding against themselves

There is a difference between reacting quickly and panicking. If the club internally value Mæhle around €7m, then the rejection is straightforward: improve the offer and try to close. If they value him materially below that, Juventus’ presence should not suddenly change the scouting department’s number.

That is how transfer windows become expensive.

Belghali provides the escape route

Rafik Belghali remains important precisely for this reason. The Algerian is younger and presents greater resale upside. If Wolfsburg become inflexible—or Juventus materially increase the market—Olympiacos have another serious full-back profile available.

That reduces the danger of entering an auction simply because Mæhle was the first-choice target.
