Juventus have entered the race for Joakim Mæhle — just as Olympiacos had moved the deal into its final club-to-club stage

Olympiacos had done almost everything correctly. They identified Joakim Mæhle as the preferred right-back after Pablo Maffeo left. They persuaded a player who was initially uncertain about moving to Greece.

They reportedly reached agreement on most or all personal terms. They submitted a proposal to Wolfsburg.

Danish reporting then described the transaction as close. And now Juventus have arrived. That is exactly the type of late-window intervention that can transform an apparently controlled transfer into something much less predictable.

Juventus have entered through an unusually convenient channel

This is not a cold approach. Juventus are already speaking with Wolfsburg regarding goalkeeper Kamil Grabara. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, those discussions gave Juventus the opportunity to ask about Mæhle at the same time. That matters because the Italian club does not need to establish the seller relationship from zero. The communication line is already open. That can accelerate a transaction dramatically in the final days of a window.

Olympiacos still have the advantage that matters most: the player work is already done

At least according to the strongest previous reporting. Danish sources had Mæhle accepting Olympiacos’ terms and the remaining negotiation sitting with Wolfsburg. Juventus have not reached that stage in anything I could verify. They have asked. They are evaluating.

This gives Olympiacos an important head start. The question is whether that head start survives the attraction of Serie A.

Mæhle knows Italy extremely well

This is where Juventus become dangerous. Mæhle spent two and a half seasons at Atalanta. He knows Serie A.

He knows the country. He knows the tactical environment. A return to Italy would therefore carry almost no cultural or league-adaptation risk. For a player who had reportedly required persuasion about Greece, Juventus can present a much easier personal proposition. That does not mean he automatically prefers Turin.

It means Olympiacos cannot assume earlier agreement makes the choice irreversible.

Juventus can also offer the one thing Olympiacos cannot: top-five-league continuity

Olympiacos can offer:

a major role;

European football;

domestic title expectations;

a coach who clearly wants him;

and a project investing aggressively.

Juventus can offer:

Serie A;

one of Europe’s biggest club brands;

and a return to a league where Mæhle already succeeded.

That is a powerful late variable.

The financial structure may matter even more than the badge

Italian reporting suggests Juventus are considering either a low-cost permanent transfer or a loan-with-option structure. That could appeal to Wolfsburg if Olympiacos’ offer has not yet met their preferred valuation.

A loan accompanied by a contract extension could also protect Wolfsburg from losing leverage with Mæhle’s current deal moving toward its final year.

Again, this is Juventus’ reported concept, not an accepted structure. But it creates another possible solution for the seller.

Olympiacos now have incentive to move quickly

Before Juventus appeared, Olympiacos could continue negotiating Wolfsburg’s price while relying on the player-side agreement. That luxury has diminished.

Every additional day gives Juventus time to:

formalize interest;

speak to the player;

and improve Wolfsburg’s alternatives.

If Olympiacos genuinely view Mæhle as the preferred right-back, the cost of waiting may now be greater than the cost of closing a relatively small valuation gap.

This is where Belghali becomes strategically valuable again

Olympiacos are not trapped. Rafik Belghali remains the strongest alternative, and current reporting already had him close enough to the top of the board that some Greek sources described the race as almost balanced.

Belghali gives Olympiacos leverage if Wolfsburg suddenly increase demands because Juventus are involved.

The club should not allow an outside bidder to turn Mæhle into an auction far above its internal valuation.

That is precisely why keeping multiple serious targets alive matters.

But losing Mæhle now would hurt more than losing a casual target

This is not a player Olympiacos merely scouted. They invested negotiating time. Persuasion. Player-side work.

Club talks. The deal had advanced. A Juventus hijack would therefore force another tactical and recruitment reset at a position already destabilized by Maffeo’s rapid exit. That makes this more consequential than an ordinary transfer rumor.

The next threshold is now very clear

Another article saying Juventus “like” Mæhle will not be enough. The genuinely meaningful next developments are: Juventus submit a formal offer. Mæhle gives Juventus a player-side green light. Wolfsburg accept Olympiacos’ proposal before Juventus advance. Olympiacos improve their bid to close the deal.

Olympiacos pivot decisively to Belghali.

Until one of those occurs, Olympiacos still appear to be leading. But for the first time in several days, the route to Mæhle is no longer theirs alone.
