Antonis Papakanellos is preparing for another season away from Piraeus, but the purpose of this loan should be different from the last one.
Olympiacos and Asteras AKTOR have reached an agreement for the 20-year-old attacking midfielder to spend the coming campaign in Tripoli. Papakanellos is expected to travel to the Netherlands and join his new team’s preseason immediately.
Last season’s move to Rio Ave was designed to introduce him to sustained senior football outside Greece. This season’s move should determine whether he can impose himself inside the competitive and tactical environment that Olympiacos ultimately need him to master.
Why Asteras offers a useful next step
Papakanellos returned from Portugal with more first-team experience but without a guaranteed place in José Luis Mendilibar’s rotation.
Olympiacos’ attacking midfield and wide positions already contain established senior players, while the expected arrival of Gustavo Sá would create further competition centrally. Keeping Papakanellos as a peripheral squad member could have limited him to sporadic cup appearances and late substitute minutes.
Asteras can offer something more valuable: continuity.
The Arcadian club reportedly made him a recruitment priority and views him as an important addition to its attacking line. That should give Papakanellos a realistic opportunity to play as:
a central attacking midfielder;
a winger moving into interior areas;
or a secondary creator behind the striker.
His development now requires responsibility rather than protection.
What Olympiacos should be evaluating
Papakanellos’ technical ability has never been the primary question.
He emerged from the academy as a creative player with close control, imagination and the confidence to receive between defensive lines. He was also an important part of the Olympiacos side that won the 2023–24 UEFA Youth League.
The senior-level assessment is more demanding.
Olympiacos will want to see whether he can:
influence matches consistently rather than through isolated moments;
defend and press with the intensity Mendilibar requires;
protect the ball against physically stronger opponents;
produce goals and assists;
and remain effective when opponents deny him central space.
Asteras regularly face teams defending compactly in domestic competition. That should force Papakanellos to develop solutions against low blocks—the type of opponent Olympiacos encounter frequently.
The significance of remaining in Greece
The Rio Ave loan gave Papakanellos useful experience in a different football culture. The Asteras move gives Olympiacos a more direct comparison.
He will now play against the same opponents, pitches and defensive styles he would encounter in an Olympiacos shirt. Club staff can evaluate him without adjusting heavily for differences between leagues.
There is also an emotional test.
A highly rated Olympiacos academy graduate playing elsewhere in Greece will face significant attention. His performances against larger clubs will be scrutinised, while quiet matches may be judged more harshly than they were abroad.
Handling those expectations is part of becoming an Olympiacos player.
Why regular minutes matter more than staying for Europe
Papakanellos could have remained as depth, particularly during a season with European competition. That would have offered proximity to Mendilibar but not necessarily meaningful development.
For a 20-year-old attacking midfielder, training with stronger players is useful. Playing every week is usually more valuable.
The decision suggests Olympiacos believe he needs another full season of competitive evidence before determining his long-term position. A strong campaign could bring him back as a genuine rotation option rather than as an academy player requiring opportunities.
A poor or inconsistent campaign would clarify that the pathway may need to take a different direction.
The missing contractual detail
No credible report has yet stated whether Asteras hold a purchase option.
That distinction matters. A straightforward loan would indicate that Olympiacos still intend to retain full control and reassess Papakanellos next summer. An option could suggest greater uncertainty about his future.
Until the clubs announce the terms, the safest conclusion is that the agreement concerns a season-long temporary move.
