Tzolakis To Hull City DONE DEAL For €20 Million, Can Olympiacos's Replacements Measure Up?

Olympiacos appear ready to part with one of the most valuable players produced by their academy in recent years.

First reported by Kostas Lianos, Ben Jacobs confirms that Tzolakis’ move to Hull City is complete at a package worth £17 million. The transaction is not yet formally announced, and Greek reporting says the goalkeeper must still complete his medical and the final player-side paperwork. The central negotiation between the clubs, however, is described as finished.

Financially, the logic is powerful. A fee approaching €20 million for a goalkeeper developed internally represents almost pure capital gain before agent fees and associated costs. It gives Olympiacos greater capacity to reinforce midfield, left-back and other priority areas without depending exclusively on Champions League income.

Sportingly, the decision is more complicated.

Tzolakis had become more than a promising young goalkeeper. He was a proven European performer, an established Greek international and a player whose penalty-area authority had developed significantly. Selling him removes continuity from one of the most sensitive positions immediately before important European qualifiers.

Olympiacos have attempted to manage that risk by recruiting Stefan Ortega. Ortega offers extensive experience in a possession-dominant environment and should improve buildup under pressure. Yet he must still adapt rapidly to Mendilibar’s defensive line, Olympiacos’ set-piece organization and the emotional demands of Karaiskakis.

The sale therefore cannot be evaluated only through the transfer fee. It must be judged through the combined outcome: the money received, the performance of Ortega and the quality of the players acquired with the proceeds.

Olympiacos have monetized Tzolakis at an elite level. Their next responsibility is ensuring that the sporting structure does not lose more value than the balance sheet gains.
