Olympiacos Women's Football open the promotion campaign with a 12–0 demolition

Three minutes. That was how long Olympiacos Women needed to score their first league goal of the new season. By the fifth minute there were two. By the 15th there were four. By halftime there were seven and when the first match of Olympiacos’ second season as a women’s football club finally ended in Glyfada on Sunday afternoon, the scoreboard read: PAS Athinon 1966 0–12 Olympiacos.

There will be more difficult afternoons. Much more difficult ones but this is precisely the type of result Olympiacos need while attempting something unusual: accelerating a newly created football department through the Greek pyramid as quickly as the competition allows.

Last season was only stage one

Olympiacos launched their women’s football team last season because a newly established side could not simply be placed into the top division, the club had to begin lower in the pyramid.

The first objective was promotion. Achieved. Now comes the second.

Olympiacos entered the B Ethniki with the same fundamental requirement: get out of it. Konstantina Giannou could hardly have been clearer before Sunday's opener, describing promotion as the team's “non-negotiable goal.” That makes this season different from a conventional development project. Olympiacos are developing a team while simultaneously demanding immediate results from it. Sunday was the first competitive test of whether those two processes can coexist. The answer was emphatic.

Seven goals before halftime tells the story

Xylouri opened the scoring in the third minute. An own goal followed in the fifth. Tzani made it three after 12 minutes. Pelekouda scored in the 15th. Larsson in the 18th. Atako in the 29th. Matzana in the 32nd. Seven goals inside 32 minutes.

There was no prolonged opening period in which the favourite struggled to convert superiority into chances.

No waiting for fatigue to expose the opponent. Olympiacos immediately turned territorial and technical superiority into goals. That is what promotion favourites are supposed to do against opponents they materially outmatch.

Then came an encouraging second-half detail

Games at 7–0 can become tactically useless. Players start chasing individual goals. Distances expand.

Defensive concentration disappears. The match becomes an exhibition rather than preparation for the next competitive challenge. Olympiacos still scored five more after halftime. But importantly, the production remained distributed. Tzani added her second. Katsanou scored. Veniamin scored. Giannou scored. Mylona completed the afternoon in the 80th minute.

Olympiacos finished with 10 different individual goalscorers, plus an own goal. That is arguably the most interesting statistic of the afternoon.

Because promotion cannot depend upon one scorer

Dominating a lower division can create a deceptive tactical habit. Give the ball to the best attacker.

Allow her to repeatedly solve the game. Accumulate wins. Then reach a higher level where opponents can remove that player — and discover the attack has never learned to function collectively.

Sunday suggested something healthier. The goals came from different positions and different players.

Tzani scored twice, but nobody else needed to. Larsson and Atako registered their first goals for Olympiacos.

That distribution creates competition for minutes while also making the attack less predictable. For a club planning to reach the top division rather than merely survive the current one, that matters.

The clean sheet matters too

Twelve will dominate every headline. Zero should not disappear. Olympiacos did not allow the extraordinary attacking margin to completely dissolve their defensive responsibility.

At 8–0 or 9–0 defenders can lose concentration because they have barely touched the ball. Full-backs can become permanent attackers. Rest-defense distances can become careless. One transition suddenly produces an unnecessary goal. Olympiacos avoided it.

The result therefore provides the cleanest possible opening-day combination: maximum attacking output and no concession.

But 12–0 also creates a challenge

The coaching staff cannot learn everything it needs from games like this. A promotion campaign eventually requires evidence of how a team behaves when superiority disappears. What happens at 0–0 after 70 minutes?

What happens after conceding first? Can Olympiacos break a compact block when the first four chances do not become goals? Can they defend a one-goal lead under pressure? Can they manage the emotional intensity of a match against another promotion contender?

Sunday answered none of those questions. It wasn't required to. Those tests will come.

This project is ultimately about reaching the level where 12–0 stops happening

That is the paradox. Olympiacos should enjoy performances like Sunday’s but the entire purpose of the project is to graduate beyond them.

The club is attempting to construct a women's football program worthy of the scale of Olympiacos.

That means reaching the top division. Competing for domestic honours. Developing infrastructure and players.

Eventually establishing a European ambition. None of that happens immediately. The pyramid has to be climbed first. Last season Olympiacos completed the first step.

On Sunday, they began the second with 12 goals, 10 different scorers, a clean sheet and three points.

The scoreline is spectacular. The objective remains considerably simpler. Get promoted again. If opening day is any indication, Olympiacos Women have no intention of taking the long route.
