Edson Álvarez has reportedly agreed personal terms with Olympiacos

Olympiacos were prepared to spend extraordinary money on Gustavo Puerta. That pursuit failed not primarily because the club lacked ambition, but because the player ultimately preferred other European routes.

With Edson Álvarez, the dynamic now appears different. The latest reporting says the player himself is prepared to join Olympiacos. That makes the transaction fundamentally easier.

The recruitment problem now becomes financial rather than emotional

With Puerta, Olympiacos could keep raising the offer to Racing and still not solve the player-preference issue.

With Álvarez, if the player side really is agreed, the club can focus on one question: What does West Ham require to release him permanently?

That is a much cleaner negotiation.

A permanent deal would fit West Ham better than another loan

This is where the English reporting becomes important. West Ham have Álvarez under contract and have already loaned him out once. A permanent exit clears salary, removes future uncertainty and gives the club immediate transfer income.

That is why a sale may ultimately be more attractive to West Ham even if a loan elsewhere had initially appeared possible. For Olympiacos, ownership is more expensive but strategically stronger. If Álvarez performs well, they retain the asset.

Tactically, he may be an even cleaner fit than Puerta

Puerta would have added running, progression and long-term upside. Álvarez offers something more specialized: defensive structure.

He can sit. Screen the centre-backs. Compete aerially. Defend second balls. Drop into the back line. That becomes especially valuable with Nair Tiknizyan on one side and Marcus Pedersen about to arrive on the other.

Both full-backs want to attack. Álvarez can provide the insurance behind them.

The Pedersen signing actually makes Álvarez more logical

Olympiacos’ squad is becoming more aggressive vertically. Pedersen brings speed and forward running.

Tiknizyan does the same.

If Vargas or another attacking winger eventually arrives, even more players will operate high. That increases the need for somebody whose natural instinct is to remain behind the attack. Álvarez is exactly that profile.

He would also liberate Hezze

Santiago Hezze is at his best when he can attack situations aggressively. With Álvarez holding behind him, Hezze could press higher and leave his zone more frequently without exposing the centre as badly.

That creates useful combinations:

Álvarez + Freuler — maximum positional control.

Álvarez + Hezze — aggression with a fixed anchor.

Álvarez + Mouzakitis — defensive stability plus more progressive passing.

That is a very flexible midfield group.

The fee remains the key unresolved issue

This is where caution is essential. The newest English piece references a low permanent-sale number based on Greek reports, but other reporting has placed West Ham’s valuation closer to the low-to-mid teens in euros. Until West Ham themselves accept a deal—or a top English transfer reporter independently confirms the structure—we should avoid treating any figure as definitive.

So the real next threshold is now: West Ham accept. Everything else is secondary.
